Active Tameside wins ukactive ‘Outstanding Achievement’ award

Published: 5th December 2017

Active Tameside’s people are proud to have received a national industry award for ‘Outstanding Achievement’ at the ukactive Active Training Awards. The award was presented in Reading on 30th November, at a ceremony attended by sporting stars such as Darren Campbell and ukactive Chair, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson.

The award recognises Active Tameside’s success in overcoming significant organisational challenges through a combination of effective strategy, staff development and inspirational leadership. The award criteria included evidence that Active Tameside (a not-for-profit charitable leisure trust) had harnessed innovation and collaboration to transform their delivery model, as well as how they had broken new ground to divest from reliance upon traditional funding streams.

The physical activity sector’s best performers

The ukactive Active Training Awards acknowledges the physical activity sector’s best performers in workforce development. More than 250 leaders from the physical activity sector attended the awards ceremony, which was sponsored by Active IQ. The ‘Outstanding Achievement’ award was contested by a wide variety of leisure, sport and physical activity providers from all over the country, including local authorities, charities/not-for-profits and commercial organisations.

CEO of ukactive, Steven Ward, said: “If the physical activity sector is the golden thread running through society, its workforce is its beating heart and soul. We have to celebrate those employers and training providers who are dedicated to developing it. The onus is now on us to use this as a springboard for rapid progress on the skills agenda in the next 12 months.”

Far-reaching social benefits

Jenny Patrickson, Managing Director of Active IQ, added: “These awards are so important in recognising those who lead the way as we innovate, improve, learn and develop as a sector.”

Active Tameside Chief Executive, Mark Tweedie, said “This is a remarkable acknowledgement. It follows several years of successful hard work, which has resulted in us creating a great organisation that has become nationally renowned for its innovation and broad range of services, which deliver far-reaching social benefits. Well done Active Tameside people!”

The staff! I’d still use Active Hyde’s gym if the facilities were rubbish and the price was high. There is always a cheerful person on hand to provide help and advice, both on site and on the phone.

I am grateful to the staff at Tameside Wellness Centre for understanding my difficulties, especially since they are invisible. But believing and supporting and being kind to me has made me more determined to continue with my passion for life and remaining active as best as I can…
