The 2021 virtual ceremony, which recognised and celebrated the resilience and success of the physical activity sector, was hosted by Paralympian, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson and Olympian and Sports Scientist Professor, Greg Whyte OBE on 12th August.
As a charitable trust operating community leisure centres and an extensive programme of health and social care intervention services in partnership with Tameside Council, we were shortlisted for two ukactive Awards earlier this summer.
After receiving our first ‘Inclusion and Disability’ award in 2019, the 2020 awards were postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, the 2021 finalists had a welcome opportunity to demonstrate their community contributions and positive impact over the previous two years, both prior to and during the pandemic.
We entered the ‘Diversity and Inclusion’ category to achieve national recognition for our Everybody Can service and its significant impact across the entire Tameside community.
We received the 2019 ukactive Inclusion & Disability Award at the largest ever national ukactive Awards to date. The evening took place on 6th June at Manchester Central, where the winners of all 23 categories were announced.
Each of the award finalists underwent a rigorous independent assessment process designed to select the best in each category, from hundreds of entrants. The winners were then selected by a special jury chaired by Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, Chair of ukactive’s Board of Directors. Active Tameside were proud to have won the award, following their 2018 success as Outstanding Organisation of the Year.
Active Tameside’s Everybody Can services were central to the award, fundamentally changing lives by transforming the conventional leisure and service offer into a vehicle to address the social care time bomb. The high quality, accessible services for people in Tameside provide the opportunity for education, employment, respite, life skills development and independence.
We were proud to have been awarded ‘Outstanding Organisation of the Year’ at the ukactive Awards, which took place on 21st June 2018. The fiercely competitive Awards covered the sports and physical activity sector and winners represented the leading performers from the private, public and third sectors.
Upon being announced as winner of the ‘Outstanding Organisation of the Year’ Award, which is the most coveted award in the sector, we were described as ‘an organisation who have been assessed on their overall performance, sustainability and impact in the sector.’
Shaun Higgins, Head of Inclusion & Diversity at Active Tameside, said at the time: “I feel really proud to be part of Active Tameside, having won Outstanding Organisation of the Year at the ukactive Awards, especially living and working in Tameside. We have started the journey to reduce inactivity in Tameside and, due to the great people within Active Tameside, our partners and stakeholders; this is something that will continue at pace.”
More than 800 people attended the Awards evening, which was co-hosted by Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, Chair of ukactive. The Awards received a high level of entries, which were judged in multiple stages. Active Tameside was also shortlisted for 5 other awards, which led to us being put forward for Outstanding Organisation of the Year.
We were awarded ‘Tourism and Leisure Business of the Year’ at the 2018 Pride of Tameside Business Awards. The Awards celebrated the outstanding work of businesses from different sectors and inspirational individuals from across the region.
A total of 21 business from Tameside were awarded at the ceremony, including catering, health, digital, tourism and e-commerce businesses. The awards were judged by an esteemed panel of industry leaders and experts.
Reg Patel, Deputy CEO of Active Tameside, said at the time: “It was an honour to win the Pride of Tameside Business Award for 2018, as the Tourism and Leisure Business of the Year. We are really proud to have been shortlisted in four separate categories across the board, given the quality and quantity of the other nominees. We were pipped to the top spot in other categories by superb businesses.
“To receive this accolade and praise from businesses across the community felt truly special. It was a great night and networking time, showcasing the best that Tameside has to offer, which is significant.”
