Block booking payments

If you pay for lessons in blocks, any credits that are outstanding will be carried over and begin from 1st October. This gives you two weeks before payments resume, to try out our new procedures and ensure you are confident with them.

Procedures for attending swimming lessons

We would like to welcome you back to Active Tameside for your swimming lessons. We appreciate that for many of you this is a worrying time and a lot of things have changed in the world. We want to make you feel as comfortable as we can with the changes we have made to centres and the way your swimming lesson will operate.

As part of our commitment to keeping you safe, we have:

  • Invested in state-of-the-art fogging machines for our centres.
  • Increased the cleaning regimes by our centre teams.
  • Introduced in-centre signage and one-way systems around our centres to help you move around safely.
  • Provided sanitisation stations throughout our centres for you to use.
  • Provided comprehensive Health and Safety training for our staff prior to opening, providing PPE where necessary and putting protective screens in place.

We kindly ask that you follow the procedures below;

  • Before setting off, please put your child’s costume/trunks on under their outer clothes. We call this beach ready. The reason for this is so you don’t need to use the changing rooms on the way in. for safeguarding reasons we can not allow any child to fully undress and change in a public area and therefore they must be beach ready.
  • Spectators will need to wear a mask when walking around the centre and when spectating, so please don’t forget to bring one with you.
  • We ask that only one spectator attends with each swimmer to allow for social distancing.
  • When you arrive at the centre, please arrive 10 minutes before the start of your lesson. Due to social distancing if you arrive too early you will need to queue up outside the building or wait in your car.
  • Once the children return to you, please get them changed as quickly as possible so we can sanitise your cubicle again before use by the next swimmer. Unfortunately, showers are only available for a quick rinse and products, shampoo/shower gel/soap, is not currently allowed.
  • The teacher’s time is very precious and to ensure they can deliver your lesson and clean poolside before the next lesson; we kindly ask you not to hold the teacher up in the changing rooms. If you need to discuss anything with the teacher, they will be more than happy to give you a call when they come off the pool. Please leave your message with reception.
  • Please be aware that children have been out of the pool for a long time, initially on return we will be concentrating on water confidence, water safety and refreshing the skills previously learnt.
  • Your child will stay in the same class level, with the same percentage progress on course pro, as pre lockdown, this will not be updated for at least 6 weeks.
  • During this time, we will be working on bringing your child back to where they were pre-lockdown.
  • We are really looking forward to seeing you again soon. Please read the procedures that are specific to your centre below.

Lessons which are not yet due to start back

Due to current guidelines, we will not yet be reintroducing the following lessons:

  • Little Ducks – we are unable to deliver these sessions safely at present, as we need to stay 2m apart, in line with government, STA and Swim England guidance; to protect both customers and staff.
  • Swim School stages 6 and above – we will be prioritising non-swimmers initially.
  • Swim Academy – we will be prioritising non-swimmers initially.
  • Disability lessons – we are unable to deliver these sessions safely at present, as we need to stay 2m apart, in line with government, STA and Swim England guidance; to protect both customers and staff.
  • Junior Lifeguard – the nature of delivering this course poses too much of a risk at present, as we would be unable to comply with guidelines.

All payments for Swim School stages 6 and above will remain frozen until they can re-start. Until then, you can still enjoy the free access to lane swimming that is included in your membership – this is still available whilst your membership is frozen.

We will continue to asses capacity, with a view to restarting these advanced stages as soon as its safe to do so. In the meantime, there are opportunities to move into other swimming clubs in the area.

View the list of local aquatic clubs here.

Swim School Terms and Conditions

  • If you have to self-isolate, unfortunately we are unable to offer you a refund.
  • Swimmers should wear the appropriate swim wear i.e. a one-piece swimming costume or swimming trunks/shorts above the knee.
  • Those with longer hair should have their hair tied up and put into a swimming cap.
  • Jewellery should not be worn during swimming lessons.
  • During Covid the showers will be available for rinse only and products will not be allowed.
  • Swimmers must arrive for their lesson “beach ready” this means they must have their swimwear on underneath their outer clothes as changing rooms will not be available prior to the swimming lesson. The child will need to remove their outer clothing in public areas.
  • Children must not put on swim wear in public areas and therefore be in a state of undress due to safeguarding.
  • Changing room will be available after the lesson and cubicles/changing area will be allocated.
  • Swimmers should arrive 10 minutes before the start of their lesson to ensure they do not miss the start of the lesson.
  • If a child is late to their lesson the centre staff will, where safely possible, admit to the lesson. There is no guarantee that your child will be able to be admitted late.
  • It is not advised to swim on a full stomach so swimmers should not eat in the hour before their lesson to reduce the risk of feeling ill during the lesson. Children may come straight from school; in which case a light snack would be best.
  • It is important teachers are aware of any medical conditions, injuries or additional needs your child may have. This could include asthma, epilepsy, sight or hearing impairment or learning disabilities.
  • Do not bring your child to a swimming lesson if he/she has an ear infection, infectious diseases, open wounds or sore eyes.
  • A parent/guardian must remain on site during the duration of the swimming lesson.
  • Only one spectator is currently able to attend per child due to social distancing. Any siblings will need to sit on a parent’s knee as only one seat will be allocated.
  • Spectators must remain seated where allocated. Seats should not be moved as these have been placed at safe 2m distance apart and a mask MUST be worn whilst spectating.
  • Use Home Portal to keep up to date with your child’s progress. Home Portal allows parents or swimmers to log in and view their progress online on a weekly basis, make payments online and book new places when ready – all with ease from your computer or mobile device.
  • Due to the length of time that children have been out of the pool, the first 6 weeks will be allocated to acclimatising children to the pool environment and refreshing the skills they have previously learnt with an emphasis on water safety and water confidence.
  • Home Portal will not be updated during this time and no awards will be issued.
  • The Swimming Development Manager may extend the 6-week period at her discretion.
  • Swimming teachers will not be available for conversation during lesson times. If a parent/guardian wants to speak to a swimming teacher, they should leave a message at reception and the teacher will contact them after leaving poolside.
  • Lesson scheduling currently is extremely time sensitive and we ask you please do not hold the teacher up when they are returning the child to the changing rooms.
  • Please respect our staff, we may not have perfected all our procedures immediately upon your return. If you have any concerns, you should raise them with the centre’s Assistant Service Manager (ASM) away from your child.
  • Lessons will be taught by qualified level 2 swimming teachers. Usual teacher/swimmer ratio is no more than 12 swimmers non swimmers in the class. During Covid restrictions, class sizes have been reduced and the maximum capacity is now 8 swimmers per class. This may be lower at some pools. This will revert to full capacities as and when it is safe to do so.
  • Fun activities will be used by the teacher to help the class learn new skills, whilst providing personalised feedback to each swimmer to help them improve.
  • We will aim to keep the personal nature of the class continues as teachers will adapt some of the activities depending on each swimmer’s ability.
  • Due to social distancing, swimming instructors will not be able to make any physical contact with a child.
  • Children need to put on their own armbands/googles/swim hats.
  • In the event an instructor must make contact with a child as a preventive measure, the instructor will sanitise their hands and a record will be made at the end of the lesson.
  • Due to the length of time children have been out of the water, children may be moved into a lower-class level if the teacher feels this is necessary. This will only be in exceptional circumstances and will be discussed with parents before any move is made.
  • After the first 6 weeks, if we feel swimmers have returned to pre lockdown levels. The swimming teacher will record progress made against the outcomes for the relevant stage to keep note of what each child has achieved.
  • Every child will develop at a different speed and this is individual and will vary depending on skill and experience.
  • To move through the programme your child must complete all outcomes in order to be awarded the STA Award.
  • All equipment will be sanitised before every lesson.
  • The poolside will be scooped, and touch points will be wiped between classes, as deemed necessary during Covid.
  • Children with a disability that prevents them from completing the STA award scheme will follow the Rock Hopper scheme.
  • Active Tameside will follow government, local council and governing body guidance.
  • Active Ashton and Tameside Wellness Centre will offer a parking refund with a valid ticket.
