And it’s set to make health, fitness, and wellbeing waves across our communities for generations to come.
Hyde Swimming Baths is a six-lane, 25 metre pool complete with a dedicated changing village, poolside spectator seating and accessible facilities will officially open on Saturday 24th July.
It will allow us to provide an exciting all-round health, fitness, fun and wellbeing experience at Active Hyde to include swim, gym, fitness classes, thermal spa*, family water attraction and, of course, our Fuel café.
Commissioned by Tameside Council, Hyde Swimming Pool can provide swimming lessons for kids and adults. It has the capacity to offer swimming lessons for up to 1,000 children, provide a full programme of activities such as general or lane swimming and Aqua Fit, and is available for local school use and club hire.
It’s the second major project we’ve undertaken in recent times, with the opening of our £15m flagship facility Tameside Wellness Centre in March 2020.
Hyde Pool is set to be the new permanent home of Tameside’s historic Dukinfield Marlins Amateur Swimming Club which has previously been operating across pools at Active Tameside’s Ashton, Copley and Denton centres.
The £4m project began in February 2020 and is part of the council’s £20 million investment in providing some of the best leisure facilities in Greater Manchester.
Built on land at the rear of Active Hyde, on Walker Lane, the swimming pool is linked to the centre’s first floor fitness and thermal suites and sits alongside our popular Hyde Leisure Pool.
It features a nationally registered Changing Places room with a hoist, shower bed and moveable sink available for centre visitor and community use as well as a poolside hoist, a third Active Hyde disabled shower and toilet area and a unisex toilet block.
The pool’s energy supply will be provided by solar panel technology which will save an estimated £40K a year on running costs.
Active Tameside’s Deputy CEO and Director of Operations and Asset Development, Reg Patel, has worked with the council’s team on the Hyde Pool project.
He said: “It’s going to make such a difference to the community.
“Hyde Pool is contemporary and aesthetically pleasing and it’s a fantastic example of what good, modern, leisure should look like and will really help to meet the community’s needs.
“We’ve really focussed on making it extremely accessible to everyone, taking into account as many needs and considerations as possible.
“In addition to Hyde Leisure Pool, which is geared towards fun for all the family, we can bring in lane swimming, aquatic exercise and swimming lessons to a greater capacity.
“It means we can start to present a healthier option for Hyde and the surrounding areas, and it is built on that very premise, to enable people to live their best lives.
“It also means we can now offer a whole scheme of swimming lessons to really push on and feed the clubs but more importantly to give young people the opportunity to become competent swimmers.
“It’s more than just a pool, it’s a game changer which will enhance and strengthen the community.”
Active Tameside Chief Executive Chris Rushton added: “Active Tameside is truly privileged to be launching another exceptional facility so soon after the Tameside Wellness Centre in Denton which has been hugely successful despite the impact of the pandemic.
“At a time when the demand for aquatic activity in all its facets exceeds our ability to meet it, and not just because of Covid Secure protocols, the extension could not be opening at a better time.
“Swimming is a life skill and a skill for life and there can be no doubt that the health of the community as a whole will benefit from an exceptional facility which will be almost full from day one.”
