Swimming lessons information

When Covid-19 restrictions end on 19th July, we will be making some changes to our swimming lessons. Please read the information below to find out what will be changing and which procedures will remain in place.

Face masks

Face masks will not be mandatory, however we encourage you to wear one whilst walking through our buildings, spectating and where possible.

Capacity

There will be an increase in capacity for selected swimming lessons stages.

Swimming Lesson Procedures:

  • We are asking at this time, swimmers still attend beach ready. For safeguarding reasons, we cannot allow any child to fully undress and change in a public area.
  • Although social distancing is no longer a requirement, we encourage only one spectator attends with each swimmer to ensure centre do not become overcrowded and to allow for personal space.
  • Please arrive 10 minutes before the start of your lesson to ensure lessons begin on time.
  • Once the children return to you, please get them changed as quickly as possible to ease congestion in the changing villages.
  • Showers are now available for use.
  • Cubicles will no longer be allocated, sanitising products will be on hand for you to sanitise your cubicle before and after use.
  • The teacher’s time is very precious and to ensure they can deliver your lesson and clean poolside before the next lesson; we kindly ask you not to hold the teacher up in the changing rooms. If you need to discuss anything with the teacher, they will be more than happy to give you a call when they come off the pool. Please leave your message with reception.

Please read the procedures that are specific to your centre below.

Swimming Lesson Cohorts

  • Little Ducks – will be re introduced ONLY with a parent in the water and a teacher poolside. We will be in touch very soon in regards to the lessons returning and your payment details.
  • Swim School stages 6 and above – will be coming back. We will be in touch very soon in regards to the lessons return and your payment details.
  • Swim Academy – will be coming back. We will be in touch very soon in regards to the lessons return and your payment details.
  • Disability lessons – will be re introduced ONLY with a parent in the water and a teacher poolside. We will be in touch very soon in regards to the lessons returning and your payment details.
  • Junior Lifeguard – will not be returning as the training and assessment contains practical elements (all essential to developing necessary skills) where individuals are required to be in extremely close proximity, sometimes just inches from other’s faces; this presents a significant and concerning risk in the current climate. Your payments will remain frozen at this time.

Until such a time that the spread of COVID-19 is more controlled, we will continue to follow the RLSS UK guidance for these lessons during COVID-19.

Please be reassured that this decision has not come lightly, and everyone’s safety has been paramount.

Little Ducks

As you are aware England is moving to stage 4 of the government roadmap from Monday 19th July where restrictions that are currently in place will no longer be law, however we are all aware that cases in Tameside are still very high and we want to ensure the safety of both our staff and customers when reintroducing lessons. Little Ducks lessons are delivered by a teacher in the water and we feel it is prudent to wait until after 16th August (at the earliest) when self isolation rules change for double vaccinated people and under 18’s before delivering these classes in the water once more. We will be adding Little Ducks classes at all centres, where the parents are in the water and the teacher is on poolside and will be advertising these on our website and social media channels very soon.

SEN

As you are aware England is moving to stage 4 of the government roadmap from Monday 19th July where restrictions that are currently in place will no longer be law, however we are all aware that cases in Tameside are still very high and we want to ensure the safety of both our staff and customers when reintroducing lessons. SEN lessons are usually delivered by a teacher in the water and we feel it is prudent to wait until after 16th August when self isolation rules change for double vaccinated people and under 18’s before delivering these classes in the water once more. Your swimmers are generally more vulnerable and we want to ensure we take every precaution to ensure we protect them as best we can. We do recognise they have been out of the water for some time so will be adding classes at all centres, where the parents are in the water and the teacher is on poolside and will be contacting you very soon with details.

Swim School Terms and Conditions

  • If you have to self-isolate, unfortunately we are unable to offer you a refund.
  • Swimmers should wear the appropriate swim wear i.e. a one-piece swimming costume or swimming trunks/shorts above the knee.
  • Those with longer hair should have their hair tied up and put into a swimming cap.
  • Jewellery should not be worn during swimming lessons.
  • Swimmers please arrive for their lesson “beach ready” this means they must have their swimwear on underneath their outer clothes.
  • Children must not put on swim wear in public areas and therefore be in a state of undress due to safeguarding.
  • Swimmers should arrive 10 minutes before the start of their lesson to ensure they do not miss the start of the lesson.
  • If a child is late to their lesson the centre staff will, where safely possible, admit to the lesson. There is no guarantee that your child will be able to be admitted late.
  • It is not advised to swim on a full stomach so swimmers should not eat in the hour before their lesson to reduce the risk of feeling ill during the lesson. Children may come straight from school; in which case a light snack would be best.
  • It is important teachers are aware of any medical conditions, injuries or additional needs your child may have. This could include asthma, epilepsy, sight or hearing impairment or learning disabilities.
  • Do not bring your child to a swimming lesson if he/she has an ear infection, infectious diseases, open wounds or sore eyes.
  • A parent/guardian must remain on site during the duration of the swimming lesson.
  • Use Home Portal to keep up to date with your child’s progress. Home Portal allows parents or swimmers to log in and view their progress online on a weekly basis, make payments online and book new places when ready – all with ease from your computer or mobile device.
  • Swimming teachers will not be available for conversation during lesson times. If a parent/guardian wants to speak to a swimming teacher, they should leave a message at reception and the teacher will contact them after leaving poolside.
  • Lesson scheduling is extremely time sensitive and we ask you please do not hold the teacher up when they are returning the child to the changing rooms.
  • Please respect our staff, we may not have perfected all our procedures immediately after 19th July. If you have any concerns, you should raise them with the centre’s Assistant Service Manager (ASM) away from your child.
  • Lessons will be taught by qualified level 2 swimming teachers. Usual teacher/swimmer ratio is no more than 12 swimmers non swimmers in the class. Active Tameside class sizes have been reduced and the maximum capacity is now 9 swimmers per class. This may be lower at some pools. This will revert to full capacities as and when it is safe to do so.
  • Fun activities will be used by the teacher to help the class learn new skills, whilst providing personalised feedback to each swimmer to help them improve.
  • We will aim to keep the personal nature of the class continues as teachers will adapt some of the activities depending on each swimmer’s ability.
  • For the safety of customers and staff swimming instructors will not be able to make any physical contact with a child.
  • Children need to put on their own armbands/googles/swim hats.
  • In the event an instructor must make contact with a child as a preventive measure, the instructor will sanitise their hands and a record will be made at the end of the lesson.
  • Every child will develop at a different speed and this is individual and will vary depending on skill and experience.
  • To move through the programme your child must complete all outcomes in order to be awarded the STA Award.
  • All equipment will be sanitised before and after every lesson.
  • The poolside will be scooped, and touch points will be wiped between classes, as deemed necessary.
  • Children with a disability that prevents them from completing the STA award scheme will follow the Rock Hopper scheme.
  • Active Tameside will follow government, local council and governing body guidance.
  • Active Ashton and Tameside Wellness Centre will offer a parking refund with a valid ticket.
