Two Pride of Tameside Sports Awards winners have achieved success at the Greater Manchester Sports Awards. Dom Doyle FC, from Denton, won ‘Club of the Year’ and Russell Scott Primary School, also in Denton, came home with the ‘School Commitment to PE and Sport Award’.
The Awards presentation evening, which took place on 16th November 2018 at Emirates Old Trafford, was attended by over 500 people from across the region. The event celebrated the outstanding commitment and achievements to physical activity and sport across Greater Manchester over the past year.
Dom Doyle FC was named Manchester FA ‘Team of the Year’ last November, as well as being Tameside Football League Cup winners in 2017 and 2018. They were also Lancashire and Cheshire League Cup winners and Wray Cup winners this year, and they now also hold the Club of the Year titles from both the Tameside and Greater Manchester Sports Awards.
The club was formed in memory of Dominic Doyle, who sadly lost his life protecting his friend from a gang. Since then, club members have worked to raise awareness of knife crime and this year they will be visiting local high schools to encourage young people to stay away from drugs, gangs and knife crime.
Russell Scott Primary School’s tireless work to encourage everyone to lead a healthy, active lifestyle led to their success at both the Tameside and Greater Manchester Sports Awards. The school is driven by its aim to provide high quality PE and sport and give all children a minimum of 2 hours PE each week.
The school offers traditional and non-traditional sports in its PE lessons, such as tri-golf, frisbee, yoga and dance. Their work around healthy eating led to them being awarded the first gold in the Tameside School’s Food4Life award and all children and staff take part in the daily mile, with sports clubs being offered free of charge, to break down cost barriers.
We would like to congratulate all winners from both the Tameside and Greater Manchester Sports Awards. The full list of Greater Manchester Sports Awards winners can be found here.
