We have over 200 weekly group exercise classes to choose from across our 7 centres, including our popular Les Mills classes and a wide variety of strength, cardio, aqua and mind & body classes.
Most of our classes are suitable for ages 13 years and over (as long as accompanied by a parent or guardian), while some classes are for ages 16 years and over (excluding iTRAIN where all classes are for ages 16 years and over). This class works the whole body to the max by using a barbell to tone and shape.
The original barbell class that tones, shapes and strengthens the whole body. This 60, 45 or 30 minute workout challenges all of your major muscle groups by using the best weight room exercises such as squats, presses, lifts and curls.
Work your way around a number of different exercise stations. Each station has an exercise that focuses on a specific area of the body. This is a great way to improve your overall fitness and body strength.
A core conditioning class made up of exercises purely focusing on the abdominal muscles, obliques and lower back, combined with some relaxing cool-down stretches.
Work your way around this low-level circuit class, suitable for all. Each station will focus on a specific part of the body to improve overall fitness and strength.
A core workout using a stability ball to improve your overall body tone and core strength, through a range of stability and balance exercises.
Functional Fitness Circuits
A circuit style class based around functional movements to burn calories, gain strength, achieve good core stability and be able to move better.
A combination of Fitness Pilates, weighted squats, glute and leg-specific bodyweight exercises to lift, shape and fire up the glutes.
A blend of 3 HIIT workouts; strength, cardio and plyo, that build cardiovascular fitness, whilst improving strength, building lean muscle and maximising calorie burn long after you have finished working out.
Target the whole of your body through a range of different exercises using a kettlebell to burn calories, tone and strengthen the whole body.
Legs, Bums and Tums
Target your legs, bums and tums using specific exercises such as lunges, squats and crunches along with some aerobic exercise to improve the tone and firmness of these troublesome areas.
This is a drop-in session for anyone at any level. Whether you are a beginner wanting an introduction to weight lifting, to perfect your technique or just fancy a change from your usual gym regime.
Rockin’ Body is a resistance-based class, designed to target and sculpt muscle groups, whilst rocking out to some great tunes.
Strength and Conditioning
A high intensity workout designed to improve your muscular tone, strength and cardiovascular conditioning through the use of free weights, kettlebells and bodyweight exercises.
Stretch and Tone
A full body workout in a relaxed setting, working those troublesome areas, and improving strength and flexibility. The perfect way to wind down and de-stress.
STRONG by Zumba
A revolutionary high intensity workout where every move is synced to a beat, pushing you harder to give everything you have got.
A small circuit programme designed by True Fitness, which provides non-stop interval training to hit your fitness goals in just 30 minutes.
Tone ‘n’ Shape

Total Body Workout
Total Body Workout This class works in order to create the perfect toned body and shape. Every single muscle in the body is worked using the latest body sculpting and shaping exercises.
This suspension training bodyweight exercise class develops strength, balance, flexibility and core stability simultaneously. This is through the use of a TRX suspension trainer – a portable performance training tool that leverages gravity and bodyweight to perform hundreds of exercises.
This choreographed workout incorporates a mixture of high and low impact moves to improve heart and lung efficiency and burn calories.
Beatz®Fitness is a fun and simple all inclusive group exercise class with multi-genre dance fitness workouts to choreographed routines, across wide music genres to suite all tastes.

Your Les Mills instructor will pump out energising tunes and lead you through the workout, challenging your limits in a good way and burning up to 730 calories, leaving you with a sense of achievement.

Dance and Tone is the all-welcoming, fun and challenging fitness class for people of all ages and abilities. Taking influence from a variety of dance disciplines and popular music, designed to burn calories and tone arms, abs, thighs and bums.
Dancercise/Dance Fit/Dance Energy
Fun, uplifting and easy to follow dance-based classes which increase strength, flexibility and endurance.
A fun-packed, high energy aerobic workout set to all of those cheesy dance tunes we all know and love. High and low impact options are given, to cater for everyone.
An intense workout to provide ultimate fat burning and metabolism boosting, long after you have finished working out. Your cardiovascular health and all-round fitness will be improved through an advanced form of interval training, with alternating periods of short, intense exercise and less intense recovery periods.
HIIT Step is an innovative 30-minute HIIT exercise class, using bodyweight and a step. It has been developed using the expertise and experience from those that have competed for, and worked with, Team GB.

Rock Box is the fitness class with a difference! This full body workout takes interval training to a whole new level. It’s a stress-busting session for the mind and body where we punch, kick and smash sticks to classic and modern rock tunes (air guitars included). It’s suitable for all fitness levels, with different variations available.
SOSA Dance Fitness
An exciting fusion of ballroom, Latin and international dance styles in a high energy, but low impact, fun fitness class. Designed to be fully inclusive of all participants, regardless of age and ability.
Using a static indoor bike, the class instructor will take you through a number of routines and cycling movements to target specific areas and improve cardiovascular fitness.
This high energy class uses an adjustable step box to increase exercise levels and intensity. This class is great for toning the legs and glutes and burns lots of calories.
The original dance fitness party which features exotic rhythms set to high energy Latin music. The fun way to work out!
Anyone of any age can pick up Zumba gold, it is paced at a lower intensity and is not as fast as your typical Zumba class. The Latin styles of music and dance are used, just as they are in a standard Zumba class.
A lower body workout that incorporates Zumba routines and step aerobics with Latin dance rhythms.

Flexibility plays a huge part in everyone’s fitness. This class aids muscle recovery and eases any tension and aches and pains in the body. The techniques in this class encourage muscles to elongate, detoxify and become more flexible. Change takes place in the body whilst we are recovering, which is why flexibility training is so impactful.
Tai Chi is a Chinese exercise system that uses slow, smooth body movements to achieve a state of relaxation of both body and mind.
Tai Chi for Arthritis and Falls Prevention
A low level Tai Chi class, suitable for those who may want to do the class seated, standing or a mixture of both. This social session includes a cuppa too!
Strengthen, stretch and lengthen your body. Flexibility, strength, balance and core stability is greatly improved through a range of breathing techniques, fluid movements and relaxation. The perfect way to unwind!

Adult Swimming Lessons
Whether you are a non-swimmer or you would like to improve, coaches will take you through the basic strokes and techniques until you feel confident and safe in the water. Suitable for ages 16 and over.
This fun water-based aerobic workout gives you the benefit of a whole-body workout, without impacting on your joints.
These sessions will aid your child’s development and confidence, both in and out of the water, whilst improving mobility and supporting their growth. Suitable for ages 0-5 years.
Fun 4 All
A great family session with a range of equipment available to put some extra fun into your swim.
Whether you’re swimming for fitness, fun or as a family, General Swim is open for everyone to enjoy the pool.
Enjoy some extra fun in the pool with our fantastic inflatable obstacle course. A great high-energy session for kids. Please note that a child has to be able to swim 50 metres of a good recognised stroke and tread water for 1 minute to be able to go on the inflatables.
Lane Swim/Adult Lane Swim
A time to work on endurance fitness through structured length swimming. Lane division will be based on the pace of the swimmers.
Little Ducks sessions are delivered by qualified swimming teachers and are a great way to develop your child’s swimming ability and confidence in and out of the water. Suitable for ages 3-4 years.
The perfect class for those with the ambition of entering triathlon, long distance swim or competitive masters or just wanting to improve their technique. A coach will be on hand for support, as you learn to speed swim as well as swimming long distances.
You will accompany your child in a structured swimming lesson, delivered by a qualified swimming teacher. Once your child is confident enough, they can progress to our Little Ducks lessons. Suitable from 2 years of age.
Active Tameside’s Swim Academy replaces pre-club lessons and will be the next step for swimmers who have completed the Active Tameside Swim School framework. It gives swimmers the opportunity to experience the environment of a competitive training scheme.
Swim Fit Coached
Our Swim Fit coached sessions have instructors on hand to help you achieve your goals, running ASA approved programmes to engage swimmers of all levels.
Swim Fit Lane Swim
Swim Fit offers a free online poolside club and gym style workout programme for the pool. Whether you’re looking to lose weight, increase your fitness level or compete, there is a Swim Fit programme for you.
Swim School teaches a wide range of skills to create a competent, confident and safe swimmer who then has the skill base to develop technique in a variety of water based sports. Suitable for 4 years and over.
Swim, Slide and Waves
Take on the Red Ripster slide, wave machine, water cannon and rapids at Swim, Slide and Waves! These sessions are great fun for all the family.
These sessions will aid your child’s development and confidence, both in and out of the water, whilst improving mobility and supporting their growth. Suitable for ages 0-8 years.
You should arrive at least 5 minutes before the class starts. Entry will not be allowed after the warm up, for safety reasons.
Any injuries or medical conditions should be reported to the instructor prior to the class starting. If you are new to a particular class, please make this known to the instructor, who will then do their best to ensure that you are comfortable and can follow their instruction.
Our group exercise classes are suitable for all levels of fitness, however they may vary in complexity. Participants are always recommended to work at their own level, rest when needed and do the alternatives offered by the instructor when required.
Correct footwear that is secure and comfortable and appropriate clothing must be worn in classes. We also recommend that you bring a workout towel and a bottle of water for each session.
Active Tameside reserves the right to substitute instructors, amend classes when required and, in exceptional circumstances, cancel a scheduled class if all attempts to run the class fail.
The purpose of this policy is to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of our group exercise timetable. By following the correct procedures, both yours and your fellow members’ experience will be enhanced and we will have accurate data to benchmark and improve our group fitness offering moving forwards.
We have a ‘two-strike’ rule for cancelling classes. This means that if you cancel within three hours of the session starting, or you fail to attend your booked session, a strike will be added to your account and it will stay on your account for 30 days. If you then get a second strike, you won’t be able to book a session for eight days. Your account will refresh after your 8-day ban.
Please ensure, where possible, that you swipe your membership card at the entrance before the start of a class to mark you in. The instructor will also take a register to ensure that class numbers are correct and do not exceed the maximum occupancy.
Non-attendance can prevent other customers from being able to attend the class if there is a waiting list and it produces inaccurate data, limiting the ability to accurately monitor occupancy levels.
